Surfing
It's no accident that Costa Rica has become one of the primary destinations for surfers. The easy access to the oceanside and the variety of surfing types found in Costa Rica are very attractive to lovers of the sport. Surfers have discovered a country with distinct areas on the Caribbean, the North and Central Pacific, and the Southern Pacific coasts, each offering some of the best surfing conditions around.
Tamarindo's beach break in particular is known as one of the more forgiving spots in Guanacaste, with a sandy bottom and a range of wave sizes depending on the tide and swell, which is why several surf schools in town focus on first-time and beginner surfers. Board rental and lesson bookings can be arranged through the front desk.
Sportfishing
Sportfishing is an outstanding attraction found on the coasts of both oceans, at the lake at Arenal Volcano, and in some rivers. Costa Rica is well known throughout the world for the richness and diversity of the species inhabiting its waters, such as marlin, sailfish, huge tuna, rooster fish, and snapper on the Pacific side, and snook, sea bass, mahi-mahi, and snapper on the Atlantic side.
Leatherback Turtle Nesting Season
Each year, from mid-October to mid-February, leatherback turtles (the "Baula") come to Las Baulas Marine National Park at Playa Grande, close to Tamarindo, to lay their eggs. Under current park regulations, guided nesting tours inside the park are no longer offered to visitors. If you're visiting during nesting season, the front desk can point you toward the park's ranger station for the current conservation program and visitor policy.

Local Wildlife
Guanacaste's dry tropical forest is home to plenty of wildlife you can spot without leaving town, including howler and white-faced monkeys, coatis, and iguanas that are frequently seen in the trees and gardens around Tamarindo.
